The Importance of Mindset When Practicing Self-Care

Self-care is my number one priority for 2018. I talked a lot about the importance of self-care and self-love in regards to anxiety, depression, and overall happiness in my Self-Love Instagram Challenge post. In the last two weeks since I’ve had this epiphany, I’ve been putting a lot of time and lot of effort into myself. More than I ever have before.

I’ve been taking this time to enjoy quiet, candlelit bubbles baths,

relaxing Panera trips all by myself,

movie nights in bed with a mug of hot chocolate,

meeting friends for dinner at local hotspots on a Friday night,

and time with my boyfriend.

All of these are things that make me happy and relax me. But, something I’ve learned over the past two weeks is that a positive mindset is necessary if you want your acts of self-love and care to really make a difference.

You can’t just do these things as if they’re habits because then they just blend into the ordinary background of life. Instead, before you take that bubble bath or watch that movie in bed, you need to mentally prepare for your “me time,” or your act of self-love.

Each day, I sit for a moment and think, “what am I going to do today as my daily act of self-love? How am I going to care for myself?” And it doesn’t have to be anything big or extravagant or expensive. All that matters is that you put in the mental effort to create a positive mindset, otherwise known as an affirmation of the action you’re about to take.

Put it out into the universe, and declare your act an act of self-love, and then do it. When I’m sitting in my hot bubble bath I focus on my reasons for being in there; I’m relaxing, I’m gaining independence and lessening my co-dependency on others, I’m learning to enjoy time alone, I’m learning to love, respect, and care for myself so I can become the woman I deserve to be.

Bottom line; always start your act of self-love with a positive affirmation. Another great idea for putting your act of self-love into the universe is to document your actions! Post a photo of your action on Instagram with the hashtag thebellesselflovechallenge to join me on this journey! I’d love to see what you’re doing daily in an effort to love and care for YOU!

    1. Thanks for reading, and I definitely agree! It’s like one day we finally stop and look and realize we’ve put ourselves last. It’s time to change that!

  1. I really like the idea of putting your intention out there before or while you are practicing self-care. It solidifies the act in your own behalf. In your own mind there can be no doubt that this is for your own benefit and makes it totally different from what might be perceived in one’s own mind as a self-ish act.
